How to Connect WordPress to Rankium

Follow these simple steps to publish AI-generated content directly to your WordPress blog. Takes about 2 minutes.

Why Application Passwords?

WordPress uses Application Passwords to securely allow external apps (like Rankium) to publish content on your behalf. Unlike your regular password, Application Passwords are limited in scope and can be revoked individually. Your main login credentials stay safe.

Log into your WordPress Admin

Go to your WordPress site and log in with your admin credentials.

• Navigate to yourdomain.com/wp-admin
• Enter your WordPress username and password
• Make sure you have administrator privileges

💡 Tip: If you're using a hosting provider like Hostinger, GoDaddy, or Bluehost, you can usually access wp-admin through their dashboard too.

Navigate to Application Passwords

Find the Application Passwords section in your WordPress profile settings.

• Click on "Users" in the left sidebar menu
• Click "Profile" or "Your Profile"
• Scroll down to the "Application Passwords" section

💡 Tip: Application Passwords are available in WordPress 5.6+. If you don't see this section, your WordPress version may need updating.

Create a New Application Password

Generate a secure password specifically for Rankium to use.

• In the "New Application Password Name" field, type "Rankium"
• Click "Add New Application Password"
• WordPress will generate a 24-character password (with spaces)
• ⚠️ IMPORTANT: Copy this password immediately — you won't be able to see it again!

💡 Tip: The generated password looks like: "abcd EFGH 1234 ijkl MNOP 5678". Copy the entire thing including spaces.

Connect in Rankium

Use your credentials to connect your WordPress site to Rankium.

• Go to Rankium → WordPress Publishing (or click "WordPress" in the sidebar)
• Enter your WordPress site URL (e.g., blog.yoursite.com)
• Enter your WordPress username
• Paste the Application Password you just copied
• Click "Connect WordPress"

💡 Tip: You can connect multiple WordPress sites. Each site needs its own Application Password.

Common Issues & FAQ

I don't see the Application Passwords section

Application Passwords require WordPress 5.6 or later. Update your WordPress installation, or check if a security plugin (like iThemes Security) is disabling it. Some plugins add their own application password management.

Can I use my regular WordPress password?

No. The WordPress REST API requires Application Passwords for security. Your regular login password will not work. This is by design to keep your main credentials safe.

Is it safe to give Rankium access?

Yes. Application Passwords can only create and manage posts through the API. They cannot change your WordPress settings, install plugins, or access other admin functions. You can revoke access at any time.

How do I revoke access?

Go to Users → Profile → Application Passwords. Find the "Rankium" entry and click "Revoke". This immediately disables Rankium's access.

I'm using WordPress.com (not self-hosted)

WordPress.com (hosted) works differently. You'll need a Business plan or higher to use the REST API. Go to your WordPress.com dashboard → Settings → Security → Application Passwords.

My hosting provider blocks the REST API

Some hosting providers or security plugins block /wp-json/ endpoints. Contact your host to whitelist the WordPress REST API, or disable security plugins temporarily to test.
